The detail
That sour, eggy or sewage-like smell from a sink, shower or floor waste isn't just unpleasant. It usually means gases that should be sealed inside the drainage system are escaping into your home. Sometimes it's a simple dried-out trap; sometimes it's a partial blockage rotting in the pipe or a crack letting sewer gas out. We track down the source rather than mask it, so the smell goes for good.
In your area
The most common cause is a build-up of rotting organic matter, grease, hair, soap and food waste coating the inside of the pipe and slowly decomposing. A partial blockage that isn't bad enough to stop the water can still be bad enough to stink.
Other causes point to the plumbing itself. A water trap that's dried out (common in a guest bathroom or laundry that's rarely used) lets sewer gas rise straight up the pipe. In Bayside's older homes, the culprit is often ageing pipework, cracked clay drains and failed joints in period houses through Brighton, Sandringham and Elwood let sewer gas seep out, and tree-root intrusion traps waste that then rots. A blocked or damaged vent pipe can push smells back through the fixtures too. We use CCTV to find exactly which it is.

Good to know
That's usually sewer gas escaping, often from a dried-out trap, a partial blockage or a crack in the pipe.
It might mask the smell briefly but won't fix the cause. We find and remove the source so it doesn't come back.
The water trap can dry out, breaking the seal that keeps sewer gas out. Running water refills it, but a persistent smell needs investigating.
Sewer gas is unpleasant and, in enclosed spaces, best not left. It's worth resolving promptly.
No, $0 call-out, and a free CCTV inspection with any paid job.
By checking traps and vents, then using a CCTV camera to inspect the pipe for build-up, cracks or roots.
